National Network of Public Health Institutes

Our very first project focused on public health, and we are proud to continue that work with one of the nation’s premier public health organizations–the National Network of Public Health Institutes.

On paper (or maybe online now?), the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) looks a lot like a large corporation. With offices in New Orleans and Washington, DC, and a sizable remote staff working on multifarious projects, NNPHI’s needed rapid and responsive internal and external communication support. But they also needed an agency that understood the budget constraints of a nonprofit and the unique needs of public health agencies.

We were fortunate to provide onsite public relations support for NNPHI during the 2017 National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Austin, Texas, and shortly thereafter we expanded our relationship to provide communications strategy and design services for almost all of its portfolios. Through our partnership with NNPHI, we have worked on projects to increase physical activity in schools, reduce tobacco use among rural Americans, enhance health departments’ response to COVID-19, and much more.

Insight.

The public health workforce was under significant strain prior to COVID-19, and the result of decades of underinvestment was clear when the pandemic began in early 2020. Public health professionals have been forced to do more with less–less time and funding. We have worked with NNPHI to ensure we are delivering the right information to the right people at the right time on the right channels. We have evaluated web traffic data and analytics from email marketing and social media to identify the peak times during the week when professionals might be looking for information, and that’s when we send them exactly what they need to advance population health in their communities.

Innovation.

Sometimes simple innovations are the most effective. Our first project with NNPHI was to refresh their briefing booklet and folder, so the first thing we did was “flip the script” by making the booklet landscape, using stunning photography to help tell the organization’s story. We also made one more bold move by making their folder pockets vertical to create more visible copy space and create a perfect pocket for the booklet.

We’ve also worked with NNPHI to develop simple language and tools to help public health professionals get the information and resources they need to support their work today and train for the problem they’ll have to solve tomorrow. IN 2018, we helped NNPHI launch the Public Health Learning Navigator, which gives public health professionals free access to peer-reviewed content. Right now, we’re working with NNPHI on the next phase of the Learning Navigator, including a project with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health AmeriCorps to update CDC’s foundational public health training.
